What are the fashion trends in Madrid? Has the US actually encouraged the European mullet?

The metro beeped as I barely slipped through the closing doors. I looked around. I was surrounded by a zebra, Cruella DeVille, and a something that must have been inspired by Stephan King. Taking the metro on Halloween has a different vibe. According to my host family, Halloween only became popular in recent years thanks to American students and social media.

That sounds fair. Spain discovered America and, in return, we gave them a day of costumes and candy.

Halloween marks the half-way point of my Madrid adventure. I’m absolutely blown away it is nearly November, however, I feel I have been here much longer than two months.

Travel is special. As you plunge into a new culture and force yourself out of your comfort zone, you begin to realize there is more than one way to live. I’ve realized there are things I adore–and crave!–about my midwest, American culture. However, there are cultural differences from Spain that I have learned to love. I cannot wait to take them home with me and share them. Being intentional to observe, reflect, and adapt turns travel from a temporary adventure to an investment that can richen your approach to life.

I’ve been doing my best to experience as much as I can–from learning recipes to adopting (to the best of my ability) the Spanish schedule. To no surprise, style is something I am taking time to observe. Style is critical to culture as it communicates lifestyle, preferences, and values. Living with two host sisters, accompanying my host mom to shop for her showroom, and observing individuals on the metro each day has taught me a lot.

My host mom asked me to model this outfit from here showroom. Let’s look at what’s trending in Madrid from this fit.

  • Top
    • layers, layers, layers
    • neutrals
    • knits
    • pop of color
  • Pants
    • wide leg fit
    • ankle slit
    • utility-like construction
  • Boots (combat or thick soled)

Are similar trends popular where you live? I spoke with a friend from back home who said the mullet is still going strong back at my university. Unlike Halloween, that trend hasn’t caught on in Spain. But who knows… only time will tell.
