People say fashion is “another world.” They’re right, but something about 2024 says “another universe” with a dash of sci-fi. While sparkles and glitter are nothing unusual advancing to the holidays, the traipsing-disco-ball-decked models on the runway this fall caught my eye. Perhaps it’s the release of the long-awaited Dune movie in 2024 or the remaining “party trend” we’ve been living since 2021.

Perhaps the world has a new affinity with sci-fi and space.

Fashion Week in Five: Trending: Dash of Sci-Fi

Let’s take a look at some of our leading houses. A mix of ombres, airy fabrics, and shimmer takes me back to Star Wars, Flash Gordon, and my little brother’s rocket ship space costume. (Does the Fendi print give you alien skin vibes, too? Can you see Padme wearing the shimmering, airy fabrics or manipulated ruffles?)

What’s Selling Now?

Looking through today’s ready-to-wear, I’ve seen much of the following: glittering sparkles, airy fabrics, ombres, and metallics. Take a look at Anthropologie’s metallic pants and Miu Miu’s shimmering two-piece set. What about Tom Ford’s bright green dress? Something a little deeper than Holiday cheer seems to be at work.

A Dash of Sci-Fi: Is it Here to Stay?

We must ask the question: will we see more of these trends after the Christmas season inspired by FS SS-24 as seen above? Or is what we are seeing merely a reaction to the current season?

What is my personal opinion? I think you’ll see both. We’ve seen a recent fascination recently with the 90s and 2000s-inspired clothing and childhood nostalgia. The Barbie movie is a perfect example, but a more relevant example would be Christian Cowan’s collaboration with Teletubie (here). Sure it’s sci-fi, but inspired from nostalgia. I think much of what we will see this spring will arise for a longing for nostalgia, whether that means the presence of sci-fi or not!

Personally, nostalgia means a pink, faux-leather bomber jacket, Mary Janes, and my hair in pink tails and ribbons. Should I bring that back?
