Major fashion houses often look to teenagers for inspiration. Whether it was Cher from Clueless, or the skater movement in the 80s, the mix of rebellion and creativity teenagers express through clothing is often recreated on the runways. This year at Paris Fashion Week was no exception. The 2019 TV series Euphoria drove many designers to dig back into their long-lost (or purposefully forgotten) memories of high school for inspiration. As a result, “classic school girl” and “high school grunge” strutted the runway.

Why teenage fashion?

As seen with Emily in Paris, TV often influences the fashion world. The TV series Euphoria, which focuses on a group of high school, has done likewise. Viewers and designers alike have been enamored with the creative directors outfit choices. After a bit of research, the outfits appear to be inspired by 2000 fashion with a hint of–in my opinion–Miu Miu and 90s thrift shopping.

While the show has been around since 2019, Euphoria made its mark of influence in February and early March at 2022 Paris Fashion Week. Coperni RTW Fall 2022 deliberately themed their show off Euphoria. Runway looks featured tailored coats, knee high socks, hoodies, and oxfords. As a result, a new rendition of “high school fashion” is slowly creeping onto the scene.

Coperni was not the only fashion house who brought a teenage-inspired collection to Paris. Nicolas Ghesquière states that Louis Vuitton’s RTW Fall 2022 was inspired by, “experimentation through a teenagers eyes.” The collection oversized coats, buttoned trousers, rugby shirts, and slouchy jumpers.

Grunge has been influencing fashion for a while, and I predict we will continue to see its influence for a while. Additionally, I think the grunge trend will be nuanced with a rise in “classic school girl” and perhaps English prep. As someone who never dresses grunge, I think it’d be fun to try something new this upcoming season. What’s your thought?
